Academy 2021-2022

Foothills Lions RFC is proud to announce our 9th annual FLRFC winter Rugby training Academy. Started in 2013 by the Club's (at that time) head coach and visionary technical director Jim Ryan, this training academy has become a standard fixture for training our top athletes.

FLRFC plans to return to its normal Academy program schedule for this upcoming year. Training will be Mondays and Thursdays starting on Monday, November 15th, 2021 and running until the final session on Thursday, February 17th, 2022. All training will occur at the Crescent Point Regional Field House located at 125 Field House Drive, East
Okotoks, AB.

Athletes with 2004 - 2010 birth years are eligible to participate.

This year's training will include two hours of rugby game play training on Mondays and one hour of rugby skills development and one hour of strength training on Thursdays. Strength training will be provided by professional strength and conditioning coach Olivia Mohtadi. All activities will be located in the Crescent Point Regional Field House.

Sessions will teach and improve technical skills and enforce game play behaviours applicable to all styles of rugby (15-a-side, 7-a-side, etc.).

Training Schedule

At the start of the training season, athletes will be split into separate groups for the training sessions and assigned one hour slots for each of the skills development and strength training sessions.

On Mondays, training will occur from 6:00 - 8:00pm (7:00 - 9:00pm after Christmas).

Planned schedule for Thursdays is as follows:

  •  Group A: strength & conditioning 5:30 - 6:30pm, rugby skills 6:30 - 7:30pm; and
  • Group B: rugby skills 5:30 - 6:30pm, strength & conditioning 6:30 - 7:30pm.

There are usually some slight modification to days and times due to field house booking issues so the times and dates are approximate. This information will be updated as plans are finalized. See the club calendar for up to date information.

Field House Entrance Requirements

The field house is enforcing the Government of Alberta “Restrictions Exemption Program”.  The rules are as follows:

In order to be permitted to enter our facility, the field house will be implementing the Restrictions Exemption Program as required by the Alberta Government.

Anyone 12 and up that will be spectating in our facility and any adult 18 + participating in sport, will be required to show their personal identification and one of the following:

  • Proof of Vaccination (* double doses required after October 25)
  • Documentation of a medical exemption
  • Proof of a privately-paid negative PCR or rapid test within 72 hours of activity (tests from AHS or Alberta Precision Laboratories not allowed)

For greater clarity, participating athletes under 18 do not require any vaccination / exemption / negative test documentation. Only participants 18 and older and spectators over 12 require documentation.

The field house will be responsible for enforcing the participation requirements. FLRFC will not be collecting or tracking any of your information.

Coaching

All rugby skills and game play training will be planned and directed by the club's coaches Owen Key, Nate Marquardt, and Keith Lumby. Our core coaching group will be joined by other club coaches working as on-field facilitators where required.

To continue to consolidate our club's game style and training techniques, Foothills Lions RFC is requesting that ALL individuals interested in coaching next year volunteer to assist with the Academy training sessions.

If you are interested in coaching or have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to contact me or our Academy administrators.
